Croatia, Slovenia, and Montenegro: Gems of the Adriatic
Lauded by National Geographic magazine as the "country most worth visiting" in 2000, Croatia has achieved a worldwide reputation as a classic European travel destination. The country has 1,197 islands, and although many of them are tiny and uninhabited, Croatia is sometimes known as the "country of the thousand islands." Thanks to its long, narrow coastal strip and spectacular historical and natural heritage, Croatia's glories attract throngs of travel enthusiasts. Although the neighboring country of Slovenia is smaller, it contains such marvels as 20-kilometer Postojna Cave and the friendly, picturesque capital city of Ljubljana. As a result, Slovenia is an essential side trip on any visit to Croatia. And at only 50 km from Dubrovnik, tiny Montenegro is also well worth a visit.
Croatia and Slovenia have very similar historical backgrounds, and both declared independence from Yugoslavia on June 25, 1991. Croatia occupies an area of 56,000 km2 and has a population of 4.6 million. Slovenia occupies 22,700 km2 and has a population of 2.1 million. Slovenia joined the European Union on May 1, 2004, and began using the Euro in 2007. Croatia plans to formally adopt the Euro when it achieves full EU member status on July 1, 2013. Montenegro, with a population of 625,000 and an area of 13,812 km2, declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 2006, and is currently an official candidate for membership in the EU.
Despite many wars and natural disasters (including major earthquakes), Croatia still preserves many historic sites, buildings, and natural scenic spots. As a result, the tourist industry is very important in Croatia. The coastal city of Dubrovnik is considered Croatia's most beautiful spot. The city is situated on a peninsula nearly surrounded by the Adriatic Sea, with many islands nearby, and contains many intact medieval buildings. The Plitvice Lakes National Park and Krka National Park, with its spectacular waterfalls, attract throngs of visitors. Slovenia also abounds in natural beauty. More than half of Slovenia is forested, making it the "emerald of central Europe." Even Montenegro can boast of its incredible views: a site on the coast was selected as one of the world's 25 most beautiful bays in 2000.
Travel is the best way to study new things. In addition to appreciating the antiquity of medieval architecture and the cultural backgrounds of different peoples, this trip also provided the opportunity to bathe in the sea breeze while the light of dusk still lingered over the Adriatic. This scenery, as lovely as a poem or painting, is nature's precious gift to us.
